Seeme Gull Khan

Born into a long line of Sufis, Seeme Gull Khan has practiced Sufism her whole life.  Much like her ancestors did hundreds of years before her, she has passed on to her children the gift of this spirituality.

Bio

It was the summer of 1979, inside a Pueblo, Colorado courtroom, that Seeme Gull Hasan raised her hand and forever swore herself as a citizen of the United States of America.

As a little girl growing up in Pakistan, Seeme dreamed of visiting America. Most of her free time was spent in the American Embassy’s library, where she read books about America’s geography, its history, and politics. It was only natural that Seeme would eventually settle in the state she read the most about – Colorado.

It was around 1982 that Seeme became one of Colorado’s most active Republicans. As a caucus leader of Pueblo County, Seeme mobilized a voting effort that gave the Republican Party the highest vote totals it had seen in Pueblo County. The effort was rewarded with a hand signed letter from President Reagan, thanking Seeme for her efforts.

However, Seeme’s favorite passion is children. One of her greatest accomplishments includes the starting and running of the Colorado Music Fest, a Pueblo-based organization that includes a series of performances, ballets, and symphony concerts, performed by both professionals and amateur musicians; every performance included free admission to many economically-disadvantaged children. The best service of the Colorado Music Fest though, is a series of professionally trained lessons and camps that are hosted for children-at-risk, where kids can be trained in singing, dancing, and an array of musical instruments.

Seeme’s work also includes a strong business mind. She greatly assisted her husband, Dr Malik Hasan, in his pursuit of creating an HMO that was for the patients and ran by doctors! Qual-Med, which later became HealthNet, became a Fortune 500 company under the work of Dr Malik Hasan and guidance of Seeme. Her efforts have landed her a spot on the board of E-Healthcare company, HealthTrio, which anticipates its IPO to be soon. Appropriately, Seeme is one of the world’s few women to have a Business School named after her. The Seeme & Malik Hasan School of Business of Colorado State University is located in Pueblo, Colorado, and is known for putting out Colorado’s best trained MBA students, according to state test scores. Such reputation makes sense, considering that Seeme had much input over the business schools curriculum, as one of its founders. Her primary motivation in starting the business school was to offer an affordable and quality-driven business degree opportunity, to every Southern Coloradan.

Her awards include “Person of the Year” from the Alumni Association of the University of Southern Colorado, the “President’s Award” for service to the University of Southern Colorado, “Woman of the Year of Performing Arts” from the Pueblo Chamber Orchestra, and “Woman of the Year of 2004” from Safeer E Pakistan in conjunction with T.V. Pakistan.

Her personal favorite, among awards, would be the creation of the “Seeme Hasan PEACE (Providing Education in Cultural Equality) Award” by the Pueblo Hispanic Education Foundation, in honor of her work with at-risk, Latino, youth. The award will be given, accompanied by scholarship funding, every year, to a Latino student of Pueblo, Colorado.

Through the Hasan Family Foundation, Seeme will continue to build bridges between America and the Muslim World, through artwork and presentations. She looks forward to championing this cause, in addition to continuing her great work as the Co-President of Muslims For America.
